Architect Fola Alade's re-design of Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos was as a retro?t and embellishment of the ceremonial structure (that had been built to replace the old Race Course) into a much more functional facility. TBS was originally designed as a befitting Parade Ground and Open Arena by a ?rm of British Architects (Arc. Robin Atkinson and others). Owing to its signi?cant location, Arc. Fola Alade used the completed structure as the site to re-create some robust activities around the iconic Structure if only as an attempt to restore the previous organic life of the Race Course.

This led him to re-design the retro?t of the Tafawa Balewa Square into a functional Commercial hub and Shopping Complex with the incorporation of facilities for Health Care Suites, Banks and Of?ce Suites, a School, with a signi?cant amount of greens –a Cricket Pitch and Indoor Recreation facilities, re-creating some of the previous activities of the old Race Course and most signi?cantly for some return on investment - Design & Supervision (1975-78).
